Dr. Jan Verschuuren is working as a clinical neurologist at the university hospital of Leiden, specializing as a neuromyologist and registered as an immunologist at the Dutch Foundation for Biomedical Scientific Research (SMBWO). He always has had a strong interest in neurology, basic neurosciences, and immunology. Since his laboratory research during his PhD studies on the experimental autoimmune myasthenia gravis, and as a postdoc in the Memorial-Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, he has been involved in translational research on several forms of autoimmune myasthenia, including AChR and MuSK myasthenia gravis, the Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome, and on Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophy. He is a member of the American Academy of Neurology, the European Association of Neurology (EAN), the International Society for NeuroImmunology (ISNI), the World Muscle Society, the Dutch Society for Neurology, and the Dutch Society for Immunology. He is advisor of the Dutch Neuromuscular Patient organization (Vereniging Spierziekten Nederland) on myasthenia gravis and myasthenic disorders and a member of the MGFA Medical Advisory Board of the American MG patient organization.
