KBI Silversides Lecture: Inclusiveness of Women in the Practice of Medicine

Silversides Day Speaker: Dr. Janet Waters

Janet Waters, MD. MBA received her medical degree at The George Washington University, and her neurology training at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. She is the Division Chief of Women's Neurology at Magee Women's Hospital in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania, a large tertiary care center with over 12,000 deliveries per year. She is dedicated to providing excellent clinical care to a diverse population of women. She is has encouraged teaching and research in the field and has numerous publications including a text book in Women's Neurology. She conducted a course on Cases of Neurologic Illness in Pregnancy this year at the AAN in Seattle. She established the first fellowship for training in Women's Neurology.

This talk will focus on the history of Women's roles as physicians nationally and internationally. It will review the history of education of women physicians and their contributions to clinical practice, teaching, and research. A comparison will be made with the historical roles of women and where we are today.

Objectives:

  • Educate participants on the history of Women Physicians in the United States and Canada.

  • Elucidate the role women have played in clinical medicine and research.

  • Update participants on the current state of women in the field of medicine.
