Predicting Cognitive Outcomes Following Anterior Temporal Lobe Resection for Epilepsy

  • Toronto Western Hospital 399 Bathurst Street Toronto, ON, M5T 2S6 Canada (map)

Speaker: Dr. Mary Pat McAndrews

Dr. McAndrews completed her PhD at the University of Toronto and her post-doctoral fellowship at the Montreal Neurological Institute. She is a clinical neuropsychologist and cognitive neuroscientist who has been a member of the Krembil Brain Institute (and its predecessors) since 1994.  Her work focuses primarily on language and memory, using functional neuroimaging, studies of patients with medial temporal lobe damage, and brain stimulation techniques to understand how the brain networks supporting these functions are organized and modified by focal damage or therapies. An important aim of this clinical research is identification of individual differences that contribute to vulnerability or resilience to disorders affecting memory that can be leveraged in clinical practice with patients with temporal lobe epilepsy or Alzheimer's Disease. She is also at the forefront of translational fMRI in Canada, developing fMRI techniques for surgical planning and targeting/evaluating treatments for these disorders.
